Win without war...

Video here

Now, I don't really have a clear opinion one way or another on war in Iraq, but doesn't it seem that having James Baker or Warren Christopher (people who ostensibly know what they're talking about with State Dept. experience, and in one form or another think war in Iraq is a bad idea) do these peace (or at least, no war) ads make more sense than having Janeane Garofalo or Susan Sarandon? Nothing makes me yell at a TV faster than when Susan Sarandon asks what Iraq ever did to us...

I don't actually think war in Iraq is reprehensible... it doesn't seem like the first Persian Gulf war ever ended. Back then, people said, "Let sanctions work" instead of "Let inspections work", but you get the feeling that they really had no idea how inhumane sanctions really are... a disproportionate number of civilians, particularly women, children, and the elderly are hurt, while Saddam enjoys an uninterrupted dictator's lifestyle. It's almost as if Japan had rebuilt a navy in the mid 50's... would you really have to go through all the "just war" hoops to dismantle their war machine? Isn't it a continuance of a prior conflict? It's almost as if the UN wants to present as impotent a face as it can... the real problem is timing.

My problem with a war is that
1). The timing is awful. We have other more important things to worry about...
2). We're not being presented a very honest case. This is the interesting thing about the protesters now... many of them aren't protesting war, they're protesting their gov't carrying out a war without telling them why... which is a comforting thing to see in an open democracy. I'd like to believe that there's a connection between Iraq and terrorism, but what's being presented is pretty shoddy. In fact, some commentators suggest that if there's a country Al Qaeda hates more than the US, it's Iraq...
